Animal Research Scientist

Summary

Zogenix is a growing commercial biotechnology company with a mission to deliver breakthrough therapies for orphan diseases.  We have an exciting opportunity for a PhD-level scientist to lead in vivo characterization of therapeutic candidates and developing the necessary animal disease models for establishing efficacy.  Scientist will work in a collaborative, supportive environment with other disease area and clinical experts to bring new therapeutics from conception to IND filing.  The successful applicant will be a creative researcher able to demonstrate successful hands-on experience with animal models.  Emphasis will be on rare disease models, particularly in the CNS and mitochondrial disease space. 

Major Areas of Responsibilities

  • Develop animal research models for disease modeling and drug efficacy testing
  • Design experimental strategies to identify relevant and translatable efficacy readouts
  • Biomarker identification and development to guide clinical development
  • Hands-on research on testing therapeutics in multiple animal models within an industrial research environment
  • Expert analysis of experimental data and presenting experimental conclusions to team members and management
  • Write experimental reports for both internal review and external publication, including presentations at conferences
  • Close collaboration with existing research team to ensure the highest fidelity and quality of animal research performed at Zogenix

QUALIFICATIONS 

  • Ph.D. in the Biological Sciences (e.g. Molecular Biology, Pharmacology or a related discipline)
  • Creative and rigorous scientist with a collaborative, can-do attitude
  • Ability to multi-task multiple research projects and also quickly pivot to new research priorities
  • Successful research experience utilizing animal models as demonstrated through publications and references.  Prior experience in animal models of CNS and/or mitochondrial diseases is desired.
  • Thorough understanding of mouse genetics and use of animal models in biomedical research
  • Strong skill set in the basics of animal care, including experience in colony management, husbandry, breeding and genotyping
  • Experience in determining and validating the phenotype of animal disease models
  • Ability to quickly synthesize information from the literature and present to team members
  • Strong verbal and data analysis skills and ability to quickly and accurately summarize results graphically using Excel and/or Prism

  • Molecular biology techniques, including PCR, Western, ELISA
  • Formulation of drugs
  • PK studies
  • Tissue and organ isolation

Education & Experience

  • Ph.D. or post-doctoral position with research utilizing animal models
  • Minimum 2 years experience in industry with focus on animal models
